Our friend Lois, after years of living outside with her husband Mark, was just given a terminal diagnosis and told she had 6 months to live. Lois and Mark are long-term friends of JOIN, and have proudly refused most help because, in their own words, “other people need it more than us.” Now, their JOIN Worker is jumping through whatever hoops she can to get them into an apartment so that Lois can pass in peace. This is Lois’ lovely garden at her camp, a space of peace and beauty carved out of a life of hardship and struggle. If there’s one thing you learn when you become a part of the JOIN community, it is that people are resilient beyond anything you can imagine.
